Mother’s Day is an American holiday that dates from 1908 when Anna Jarvis, after holding a private memorial for her mother, began a campaign to make the day a recognized national holiday. The effort succeeded by 1914 and the annual holiday honoring mothers and their influence on society, is now celebrated all over the world.
Making mom breakfast is one Mom’s Day tradition everyone can agree on—and it’s one that often starts in childhood. Whether kids get the idea because they see dad doing it or because they hear mom talk about making breakfast for her own mother, it's a time-honored gesture that always brings back fond memories of growing up with Mom.
At the end of the blog, and in subsequent blogs, we’ll share some of our favorite breakfast recipes. They made our moms smile once upon a time; perhaps they’ll do the same for you.
Serve her favorite food
Never underestimate how much Mom loves being served her favorite food. If mom really likes eggs for breakfast, serve an egg dish. If she loves spicy food, don’t serve something bland. Remember how special you felt when you were a child and your mother fixed your favorite dish? That’s the feeling you’re going for.
Scrambled eggs may not seem like an exciting Mother's Day breakfast but you can dress them up in many ways by adding garden fresh veggies for an omelet or by being creative with the other dishes you serve. Make sure to have her favorite morning beverage on hand, too—whether that’s coffee, tea, or fresh squeezed orange juice!
Slice up some fresh fruit as a side dish or to use as toppings on other dishes. Fruits—especially berries—are loaded with vitamins and nutrients, so you aren’t just taking care of Mom by cooking breakfast, you’re making something that is good for her, too. Just like she once did, and still does, for you. As a bonus, fruits also add a lively burst of color to the plate, making the meal fun and vibrant.
Make a tried and true recipe
You can’t go wrong with a good old-fashioned pancake breakfast. Pancakes can be made with flour, buckwheat, or even gluten-free alternatives. If you really want to make mom feel she is being pampered, put together a pancake so good she’ll think she skipped right to dessert. Top off blueberry (or any berry) pancakes with a cream cheese whipped topping to make a simple, yet indulgent, breakfast treat.
Finish off with a sweet touch
Don’t forget to include a gooey and delicious cinnamon roll as the finishing touch to mom’s special breakfast. Cinnamon rolls, coffee cakes, scones, doughnuts, and apple dumplings are all delicious ways to serve sweet favorites along with the rest of breakfast. You may not eat them every day, but they can instantly make a meal feel special.
Pay attention to the little things
The little things add up. In the end they are what really make memories. Don’t worry too much about what kind of gift you will get her or which of two recipes is better. Of course you want the day to turn out well and for her to enjoy her breakfast, but she will love that you took the time to do something special just for her.

Butter for ramekins
2 slices prosciutto, quartered
1 slice tomato, salted
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Butter ramekins.
Line each ramekin with two pieces of prosciutto, laying them in a cross in the bottom of the dish and allowing them to come up the sides. Place the tomato slice on top of the prosciutto. Crack an egg into each ramekin and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grate some Parmesan cheese over the top and place on a baking sheet.
Bake 10 to 15 minutes, or until egg is set and white has solidified. Because the cup retains heat, egg will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven, so it is best to undercook it slightly.
Serve immediately in ramekins or invert onto a plate. Garnish with a fresh grating of cheese.
1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F)
2 large eggs, room temperature
1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
4-1/2 cups bread flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup white sugar
2-1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2-1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
3 ounce cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter, softened
1-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select dough cycle; press Start.
After the dough has doubled in size turn it out onto a lightly floured surface, cover and let rest for 10 minutes. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon.
Preheat oven to 400 F.
Roll dough into a 16x21 inch rectangle. Spread dough with 1/3 cup butter and sprinkle evenly with sugar/cinnamon mixture. Roll up dough and cut into 12 rolls. Place rolls in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled, about 30 minutes.
Bake rolls in preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes. While rolls are baking, beat together cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Spread frosting on warm rolls before serving.
2 Ruby Red grapefruits
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preheat the broiler.
With a sharp serrated knife, slice a thin piece off each end of the grapefruits so they will not rock. Slice each grapefruit in half and place them cut-side up on a baking sheet. With a serrated knife, slice around the perimeter of the flesh and along the edge of each section to loosen them.
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the grapefruits. Broil for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the sugar begins to bubble and caramelize. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.
