Frequently Asked Questions

Blenders

How do I clean the blender?
Wash the mixing beaker in warm water with dishwashing liquid. Then rinse. Do not use any abrasive cleaning agents that could scratch the materials. Do not immerse the blender, power supply cord, or plug under water or any other liquid. Both mixing beaker and juicer are dishwasher-safe but should be separated before cleaning. Motor unit can be cleaned with a moist cloth.

How do I crush ice using the blender?
For finely crushed ice, put 6 to 10 large cubes in the mixing beaker and put on the lid. It is not necessary to add any liquid.

How long can I process foods?
Do not use for more than 3 minutes in continuous operation. After 3 minutes, turn off the blender and wait for a few minutes before starting your appliance again after 3 uninterrupted operations.

What is the best way to put the foods into the mixing beaker?
To ensure that the food is properly mixed, put all fluids into the mixing beaker first. Give them a short, quick mix, and only then add the solid or dry ingredients. When using solid foodstuffs, cut them first into 3/4 inch cubes. To add further materials during the mixing operation, remove the stopper from the breaker lid, feed in the materials, and put the stopper back in position.

What is the best way to remove ingredients stuck to the wall of the beaker?
If any ingredients stick to the wall of the beaker during the mixing operation, switch off the appliance, pull out the main plug, and then remove the entire mixing beaker from the motor unit. Carefully remove the stuck ingredients with a knife blade before continuing. NEVER put your fingers or hands into the beaker or in the vicinity of the cutting knife.

Coffee Grinders

How do I take care of my coffee grinder?
Keeping your grinder clean is essential in achieving optimal taste results. Most coffee beans contain oils that may, over time, become stronger in flavor and could affect the taste of your coffee.
Empty the ground coffee holder after each use.
Always disconnect the grinder before cleaning.
Never place the grinder, power supply cord, or plug into water or under running water.
Do not use strong detergents or abrasive pads to clean the appliance.
Clean the lids and the ground coffee holder in warm water or place them in the upper basket of your dishwasher.

How do I select the right quantity to grind?
For an automatic coffee grinder as Krups burr grinder:
Use the number of cups selector to program the quantity of ground coffee you want. The mill grinds ¼ oz. (7g) of coffee per cup selected.

For a non-automatic coffee grinder:
Push the button control to grind coffee beans.
Do not grind coffee beans more than 20 seconds.

A longer grinding does not produce a finer grind but heats the coffee beans and destroys coffee's aroma.

A coarse ground coffee is used for the press pot or French Press as coffee remains a longer time in contact with the water.
A medium ground coffee is required for drip coffee maker as the water will slowly pass through the filter.
Espresso and Napolitano coffee makers need a very fine grind in order to have a perfect extraction in a very short time.

How do I choose the right grind?
Use the fineness selector to adjust the grind according the type of coffee maker. Generally, the suitable grind will depend on how long the brewing method will allow the water to remain in contact with the ground coffee. The quicker the water goes through the ground coffee, the finer the ground coffee should be.
A coarse ground coffee is used for press pot also known as French press. The coffee remains a longer time in contact with water.
A medium ground is required for drip coffee maker. The water will slowly pass through the filter.
A very fine grind is needed for espresso or Napolitano coffee makers in order to have a perfect extraction in a very short time.
Do not change the grind setting when the mill is running.

What is the best way to store coffee beans?
It is best to store coffee beans in a dry, cool place. Beans should be kept in an opaque, airtight container. Coffee's main enemies are oxygen and moisture, and once ground, the coffee will quickly lose its quality: moisture will damage the flavor and aroma. Coffee will become stale and flat. Oxygen will oxidize the ground coffee and will reinforce the bitter taste of the beverage, so coffee beans must be ground as close to the brewing time as possible.

Automatic Drop Coffee Makers

Can I put the serving jug in the microwave?
Serving jugs with a metallic band should not be placed in a microwave as there is a risk of damaging both the jug and the microwave.

Use and Maintenance

Cleaning your coffee machine

Turn off the coffee machine and remove the plug from the outlet. Do not clean the coffee machine when it is hot. Never immerse the coffee machine in water or put it under running water.
·Clean the body of the coffee machine with a damp cloth or sponge.
·Open the filter holder and remove the paper or permanent filter. The filter holder can be washed in warm soapy water and rinsed thoroughly, or cleaned in the upper rack of a dishwasher.
We recommend washing carafes by hand with a mild detergent.
·Do not use scouring agents or harsh cleansers on any part of the coffee machine. Thermo jugs have a glass bulb inside which should never be cleaned with a sponge or abrasive detergent.

Descaling your coffee machine

Descaling is necessary to keep your coffee machine running efficiently. The frequency of descaling depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the coffee machine.
If you notice the brew cycle has slowed, it is generally time to descale the machine. See the chart below:

Type of Water Without Duo Filter
Water Filtration
With Duo Filter
Water Filtration
Hard 40 uses 80 uses
Soft 80 uses 160 uses

·Before descaling, remove the filter holder.
·You may use either the Krups descaling solution diluted in 8 ounces of water or 8 ounces of white vinegar.
·Pour the solution or vinegar into water reservoir and start the coffee machine (without coffee).
·Allow half the liquid to run into the carafe, then switch off and let stand for 1 hour.
·Restart the coffee machine to complete the cycle.
·Rinse the coffee machine by running it through 2 full cycles with water only.
·On the timer models if the display continues to read "CALC" repeat the process again.

Making the perfect cup of coffee
Making the perfect cup of coffee is something different for everyone. The four main principles:

1. The Water
It is important to use fresh water. Since coffee is 98% water, the taste of the water will come through in the coffee. The Duo filter system removes chlorine taste, but the better the water you start with the better the flavor of the coffee.

2. The Coffee
Chose premium fresh whole beans suited to your taste. There are two principal species of coffee: Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica beans are the choice beans with more flavor and less caffeine.
Robusta beans have more caffeine and are more "robust" and are usually used in blends.
The origin of the beans and the roast will determine the flavor. Roasts vary from light to very dark. Light roasts have a smooth, delicate aromatic taste, medium to medium dark roasts are slightly stronger, with a full-bodied balanced taste, and dark roasts are bold with smoky undertones.

3. The Grind
Use the proper grind finesse and grind just prior to brewing.
The variation in the grind depends on the type of filter you use. We prefer paper filters because they allow you to use a finer grind, thus allowing a full extraction and more contact time with the water.
Permanent filters require a slightly coarser grind therefore the extraction rate is reduced.
A general rule of thumb for grinding is the longer the brew process the coarser the grind.

4. The Proportion
We recommend that you use 1 rounded Tbsp. of ground coffee per cup and modify the quantity to suit your taste.
